The mining and metallurgical sector is a strategic sector of the country’s economy, which supplies raw materials for the production of high-tech and science-intensive products (machinery manufacturing, construction industry and aviation and space industry).
The share of the mining and metallurgical complex (MMC) of Kazakhstan amounts to more than 7% of the GDP and nearly 22% in the total amount of industrial output of the country. We note that this sector amounts to 30% of the total export proceeds of the country and almost 80% of extracted and produced ore is exported.
Today, the mining and metallurgical sector of Kazakhstan deals with export of raw materials and primary metals. The main objective of the sector in the coming years is creation of new processing plants for the production of high value added products in order to expand export capabilities and meet the growing needs of the domestic market.
At present, enterprises of this sector go through tough times and face the necessity to expand its market channels, improve efficiency and competitiveness locally and abroad.
